Post 7: Final Reflection

Reflecting back to the time when it was at the beginning of the semester and the module ES2007S just started... I decided to take ES2007S because I want to improve my communication skill so as to prepare myself for my future career

Before the module, I did not realize that effective communication is essential. But this course let me understand that effective communication is needed to avoid misunderstanding, as well as, giving others (especially employer) a good impression. Communication includes writing and nonverbal cues too. Therefore this modules also teaches me how to write well (remember the 7Cs) and what nonverbal cues means.

In this module, I found writing of resume and application letter, and preparation of interview especially useful. These are the skills which I need to posses when I enter the workforce.

Here, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to Ms Happy Goh.
To Ms Goh,
Thanks for the trouble of going through our report draft again and again. You make an extra effort to give us advices on how to write a better report. We only need to deal with one report but you need to go through many reports. Not only that, you are also very patient and always there to answer our queries. Once again, THANK YOU!

Next, I want to thanks my fellow classmates too. With you, it makes the class more interesting and happening. I have learnt a lot from you too.
To my project mates,
It is really nice working with you. If I have the chance to choose my project mates again, I will want to team up with you again. Lastly, thanks for your support.

hi Jean,

I'm happy to see that you have enjoyed the module as well. I am sure that the cover letter, resume and the interviewing skills would be very useful in the very near future.

I'm also looking forward to seeing your presentation next tuesday. *wink*

Hi Jean

I find the writing of the application and resume especially useful too. It gave us the opportunity to really sit down and think about what we want to do after we graduate. I hope that now you have a clearer goal, as to where to seek employment in the near future :)

Just a note, I noticed that you typed 'mi' rather than 'me' in one of the sentences above. This has often occured to me too, when we are so used to typing informally on msn. Hope this reminds you to be more careful in documents such as the job applicaton letter! :)

Dear Jean

I agree with you that learning to write resumes and application letters, and preparing for job interviews are indeed the highlights of this course.

On the other hand, I thought the course also gave us insights to the proper ways and channels of communication. I feel that they are also essential skills that we should already possess before we enter the workforce.

All the best for your oral presentation on Tuesday!

Regards
Guang Yi

Hi Jean,

I took up ES2007s with the same intention as yours, to improve my ability to communicate and present myself better, especially for the future workforce.

The entire course not only taught us to write proper resume and application letter, it also taught us the importance of understanding non verbal cue, which are often neglected by others. In my opinion, I think all these skills are essential before we step into the workforce, especially after doing my research project.

Hope these skills you had acquired bring you to a greater height in whatever you are doing.

Hi Jean,

I also have the common aim in mind when I decided to take this module so that I can enhance my communication skills to be a better and more effective communicator, which would not only serve to prepare myself for any future endeavors but also the usefulness of it in the daily communication with my friends and loved ones. And after three months through this course have I realised that there are so many things that constitutes effective communication. Like you, I have taken communication skill for granted before I took this module, thinking that I am well equipped as an effective communicator without even learning the finer points on the “intangibles” like the choice of communication medium and non-verbal cues. And finally, I totally agree with you that the resume writing and interview course in this module have been practically very useful and will help us prepare ourselves when we graduate.

Hi,

I had a slightly differnet agenda when I took up this module. I was really looking forward to improve my writing skills and to write great resumes but it turned out that we did not really practice our writing and only spent 2 lessons on resumes. These are some of my grouses.

But I would like to congratulate you on meeting your objectives. All the best for your exams.

Rgds,
Timothy

Hi Jean,

First of all, well done for your oral presentation! To be honest, I was the person who was grading you on your individual performance and you impressed me beyond my expectations of you. The hand gestures that you used were well timed and it had a very good impact on the overall introduction of your research project. Well done!

Anyway, from your first post till this final one, you may not have noticed but I see an improvement in your writing style and your language. I guess that it is through this course that we have been conscious about trying to speak and write with proper English that we have been drilled to using the language in the right way.

I'm glad that you have benefited from this class and you have enjoyed yourself on the whole. With this, I wish you the best of luck for the upcoming exams, and that you'll continue learning and improving yourself, using the lessons obtained from this class as a starting point.

Hi Jean

I agree with Ruisheng that your oral presentation style was really beyond my expectations. I did not know that you were so outspoken before the presentation. So, well done!

I have the same feelings with you that one of the most valuable skills learnt from this course is to write resumes and application letters. During the 3 months break last semester, I was looking for a job and thus drafted out my resume. I remember my elder brother was laughing at it and told me that no one would employ me with that resume. At that period of time, I seriously did not know how to change my resume into an impressive one despite searching the internet for more information. However, after taking this course, I am confident that I can now write impressive resumes and application letters!

Hi Jean,

I have the same sentiments as you. I find that writing of resume and application letter, and preparation of interview are especially useful. These are the skills which we need to possess when we enter the workforce in the near future, especially for those, like me, who are entering the workforce next year, when the economy is so bad. *sad*

And, i believe everyone enjoys the lesson very much, although it is rather taxing.

Take care and all the best for your exams! :)
